The gift of life, Pass it on

August 13 is celebrated as World organ donation day so today I thought to share this with all of you. Every birthday I gift myself something speciaI but this year I decided to do something different to make myself a little more cheerful. One evening of valentines week i went to the same hospital for the inquiry about organ donation where my leg surgery had been done. Receptionist asked me to meet the lady ( i don’t remember her name now ) who was the in charge of the department. I met her and expressed my wish to donate organs. I told her that my birthday is coming after 3 days and i want to sign the form on that day only which is gonna be my birthday gift to myself. She stunned so surprised that she did not know what to say. After few seconds she hugged me and said इस उम्र में इतना बहुत कम लोग ही सोच पाते हैं। you are doing such noble work god bless you. She gave me a donor card which i have to keep with me all the time. I pledged to be an organ donor on my birthday. It was a fantastic feeling when I signed the organ donor form. Donating an organ is not just the physical act of giving, it is about celebrating life!

Did you know In India every year nearly:

  • 500,000 people die because of non-availability of organs
  • 200,000 people die of liver disease
  • 50,000 people die from heart disease
  • 150,000 people await a kidney transplant but only 5,000 get one
  • 1,000,000 lakh people suffer from corneal blindness and await transplant

Despite India being the world’s second-most populous country, we have a low deceased organ donation. There is a wide gap between patients who need transplants and the organs that are available in India. It’s important we address it, talk more, understand and spread awaerenss.

Who can donate ?

No one is too old or too young to be an organ donar. New borns and senior citizens into their 90s have been organ donors. Regardless of age, health all people should consider themselves potential organ and tissue donors. Even with an illness or a health condition you may be able to donate your organs. There are only a few health conditions that will prohibit you from being a donor, such as active cancer, an infection in your blood or in case of HIV.

Organ donation is a personal choice. Know the facts and talk with your family. Make your wishes known. If you choose to “Donate Life,” Register online and keep the donor card with  you.

It is a great gesture. After all, what could be a greater help than giving someone a new lease of life.

The biggest donation in this world is Organ donation by which we can actually save someone’s life. We can donate multiple organs from our body but it has a difference based on the deceased donor or a living donor. A Deceased organ donor can donate both kidneys, liver, both lungs, heart, pancreas, and intestines. On the other hand, a Living organ donor can donate only one kidney, a lung, or a portion of the liver, pancreas, or intestine.😀

Becoming an organ donor is the most noble and selfless decision one can take.
